The Goddess Tarot on the go!

As you all know, I'm a wistful would-be Luddite a lot of the time, and it takes me a while to latch on to the latest techno-toys. For example, I don't have a cell phone and really haven't been able to come up with a good enough reason to get one yet. I'll tell you, though, it's cool things like Kris Waldherr's Goddess Tarot as an app for the iPhone that may push me into the next stage of ethereal connectedness. I've loved the Goddess Tarot since it first came out, and have been so pleased at its huge success, not to mention all the other wonderful offerings from Kris, such as her fabulous book Doomed Queens. So I thought I'd get a bit more info about this new app and pass it along to those of you who have already embraced the brave new world or who are (like me) looking for more incentives to do so!

 

Lunaea: Kris, in a nutshell (which honestly is where my knowledge of apps could fit!), what is the Goddess Tarot app?

Kris: It brings The Goddess Tarot into the digital age, making the wisdom of the tarot and the Divine Feminine accessible in a new way. It's also multi-purpose: Besides offering four different tarot reading spreads, the Goddess Tarot app includes a reference center where you can learn about all of the 78 tarot cards and 22 goddesses featured in the deck. 

 

How do you envision someone using it?

I think of it as a centering tool for busy women on the go (such as myself -- I've been using it quite a lot these days!). For example, you can use the Goddess Tarot app for a tarot or oracle reading, as well as to get in touch with some of the goddesses who have been honored throughout history. If you're a Goddess devotee, you could even use the app as a meditation tool; each goddess in the deck is represented by a painting and short retelling of her myth. 

 

Do you have to know a lot about the tarot to appreciate it, or is it appropriate for tarot neophytes too?

My intention is for the app to be for tarot beginners as well as experts. I wrote fairly detailed card, reading, and goddess descriptions, and worked hard to make the app interface easy to use. I hope this will make the app appropriate for anyone, no matter what level of experience they hold.

 

As long as I've known you, I've always been impressed by the incredible amount of detailed work you put into everything, so I'm sure this is no exception! What's your favorite thing about the app?

I love that it makes The Goddess Tarot so portable. While an app is not the same as a tarot deck, we're not always able to carry a deck with us, or have the privacy to lay out the cards. The app is there for those times. On a personal level, I'm pleased with how the design came out. Most of the iPhone apps I've come across are rather unappealing aesthetically -- we all need more beauty in our lives.

 

I certainly agree with that! And everything you create is so beautiful. I like your point about privacy -- that's a great advantage of an electronic tool like this, to be able to have a secret little magical moment with the tarot in a public place.

I love that -- "secret little magical moment."  Absolutely!

 

Have you found that using a digital deck gives accurate meaningful readings?

Yes, surprisingly accurate. I like to say that though the medium has changed, the message still gets through. For example, I was recently stranded at JFK airport with my daughter; the reading I received from the app really helped me proactively transform a difficult situation. (You can read more about that here.) On the other hand, any medium is only as good as the user's intentions. If a digital deck is treated like a virtual Magic 8 ball, most likely the readings are not going to be particularly insightful. 

Let's ask the app a question right now: What wisdom should the reader of this blogue take away today?

I've just pulled out my iPod and chose the One Card Oracle reading. The app's response: the Queen of Swords. This seems most appropriate to me, since the Queen of Swords is associated with intellectual understanding and wisdom. She encourages us to live up to our highest standards -- to access what is most brilliant, honest, and powerful about ourselves. Hopefully The Goddess Tarot app will do the same for those who use it!

The Goddess tarot was my very first deck and remains one of my top favorites. It was a very warm and welcoming deck for beginners, full of love and gentleness. I don't have an iPhone - the plan is too expensive - but this app seems really great and useful. Wish it was compatible with other types of phones!
